Boundary Layer Theory

Boundary layer flows exist in many technical and natural flows.

General Informations

The students must be able to understand and use the methods for the description of boundary layer flows as well as acquire and explain the associated flow physics. For this purpose they must firstly possess the mathematical bases, i.e. the regular and singular perturbation methods. Secondly, they should be able to deduce the Prandtl boundary layer theory by means of the Navier-Stokes equations by the lecture. On the basis of this equation different fundamental solutions are deduced, which permit the student an entrance to the fundamental phenomena and connections of many generic boundary layer flows. They must be able to be deduced and understood by the students. It follows turbulent as well as thermal boundary layers, for which the students must be able to deduce their appropriate equations as well as compute special solutions discussed in the lecture.
