General Informations
The global qualification goals are the integration of analytical and numerical tools solving fluid mechanical problems. For this purpose the students use some analytical methods e.g. asymptotic methods, perturbation calculation, symmetry theory and the traditional numerical methods e.g. finite difference, finite volume or finite element methods for solving the differential equations in fluid mechanics. For given comparatively simple fluid mechanical problems the students are able to simplify the Navier-Stokes equations in the first step by means of analytical methods. In the second step these simplified equations should be numerically solved. They must evaluate the corresponding results and judge their quality. Finally the results are summarized and presented.
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of numerical methods, knowledge of ordinary and partial differential equations. Ideally knowledge of numerical simulation in fluid mechanics, symmetry methods, perturbation methods.
Contents: In the Tutorial„Tutorial of Numerical Analysis and Fluid Mechanics“ a specified flow problem will be investigated by means of the computer algebraic system Maple and the numerical software Comsol Multiphysics. At the beginning an analytical solution will be acquired by means of Mapple. Afterwards the problem will be numerically calculated by employing Comsol. Comsol is a commercial software for numerical simulation of „any“ physical problems, which can be described by partial differential equations beschrieben. It is based on the FEM method. Finally the analytical and numerical solutions will be compared with each other.

The number of participants is limited to 12 students. For the case with more registrations than the available positions the time of registration will be decisive.

Examinations
Written final report and the final interview.
Dates for the final interview are to be announced. A written report must also be prepared and submitted both in paper form and electronic form before the final interview.
For the marking, the collaboration during the tutorial, the report and the final interview are considered.
